Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia maintains its tsunami watch advisory for the northern states although the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre has dropped Malaysia from the tsunami watch area.
Meteorological Department’s geophysical and tsunami division head Dr Roshaidi Che Abas said while the tsunami threat from the 8.6-magnitude earthquake off northern Sumatera is over, the advisory is still on following the 8.2- magnitude aftershock.“We will have to wait for about another hour to monitor the situation before we can lift the tsunami alert,” he said. The centre has now reduced the tsunami watch area to Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka, Maldives and United Kingdom. Malaysia was earlier in the alert following the earthquake in the late afternoon today.
The centre said it only detected measurements or reports of tsunami wave activity in several areas. It recorded waves of 0.1 ft in Trinconmalee, Sri Lanka, Cocos Island, Australia (0.3 ft) and Telukdalam (0.6 ft), Sabang (1.2ft), Meulaboh (3.5 ft) (all in Indonesia).
“Sea level readings indicate tsunami was generated. It may already have been destructive along some coasts,” it said in its fifth bulletin issued since the earthquake occured. There had been several aftershocks with the highest registered at 8.2 on the Richter scale.
“As local conditions can cause a wide variation in tsunami wave action, the all clear determination must be made by the local authorities,” it said.
PRAY FOR THE VICTIMS AND ALSO FOR US. WE WILL NEVER LOSE ANYTHING BY PRAYING :/
